Fri, Oct 20, 2017, 12:48 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 19, Colombo: Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that the responsible media should not highlight false and fabricated news misleading the people of this country. He made this statement at an event held at the parliamentary complex today.

The research report on the proposed new constitution draft prepared by three institutions including Sri Lanka Press Institute was presented to the Premier today at the event.

The research report themed “Constitution for People’s Governance” contains findings on executive presidential power, socioeconomic, cultural and political rights, independent commissions and the election system. The research was conducted by the three institutions covering all districts.

The Premier said that an accusation was leveled against the ruling party for misleading the people. He asked as to who is misleading the public. He noted that he has seen a report saying the most venerable Maha Nayaka Theras are against the new constitution.

“I spoke to venerable Maha Nayaka Thera of the Malwathu chapter today. He is out of the country at the moment. So how can the media carry his picture? How can media mislead the public in this manner?” he asked.

He said this is a clear example of misleading the public. The Premier said the Malwatta Maha Nayaka Thera has clearly expressed his views on the issue of new constitution.

The Prime Minister said a new constitution is yet to be introduced and the President will take absolutely correct stance on this matter.
