ECONOMYNEXT – The visit of newly re-elected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Sri Lanka, soon after Easter Sunday bombings is a strong signal to the world, President Maithripala Sirisena had said.
Prime Minister Modi is the first foreign head of government to tour Sri Lanka after Easter Sunday bombings.
President Sirisena had thanked PM Modi for sending a strong signal to the world by visiting Sri Lanka soon after the Easter Sunday blasts, when there was uncertainty in the country, a statement said.
Sri Lanka is expecting stronger economic, trade and tourism with India following the PMs visit.
Prime Minister Modi visited Maldives and Sri Lanka where China has made inroads.
The two leaders had discussed ways to boost bilateral ties and improved regional security and peace, the statement said.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had been trying to give a share of a container terminal in Colombo Port to India, but has faced opposition from President Sirisena in cabinet.
China already has a terminal in Colombo as well as a control of a entire port in Hambantota. (Colombo/June10/2019)
